What does pet portraits mean to me?
Art has always been my way of connecting with the world, and it wasn’t until I began creating pet portraits that I truly found my passion. To me, pet portraits are far more than just drawings or paintings; they are heartfelt tributes to the bond we share with our beloved animal companions.
Remembering Sammi
One time, I painted a gouache portrait for a friend of mine. Her German Shepherd, Sammi, had battled cancer and had since crossed the rainbow bridge. Sammi was a sweet and loyal girl who always stayed by my friend Sjana’s side. They shared a bond filled with love and care, and I wanted the painting to reflect that connection. I like to believe that Sammi is now happily chasing squirrels in heaven. All dogs go to heaven, and they always live in our hearts.
Honoring Santos
Another time, I created an oil painting of a pet for a friend as a surprise because their dog, Santos, had recently passed away. When my friend and his wife opened the box and saw the portrait of their beloved and loyal companion, the room was filled with emotion. His wife couldn’t hold back her tears, and I could feel the depth of her love and grief in every tear. They both cherished the portrait, and I was honored to create something so meaningful. I like to think that Santos is watching over them and blessing them. Rest in peace, Santos.
Painting with Purpose
Every time I paint a pet portrait, I think about the unique story of the pet and how deeply they are loved by their owners. These stories inspire me to pour my heart into each piece and push myself to paint better, never settling for less. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with these beloved companions through color and brushstrokes.
Conclusion
Pet portraits are more than just artwork; they are a way to honor love, preserve memories, and celebrate the deep bonds we share with our animal friends. Each piece is a tribute to the special place pets hold in our lives, and I am privileged to be part of that process.
